Deb Haaland

PUEBLO OF LAGUNA

As a kid, I never could have imagined today. I will leave the ladder down behind me so girls of color know they can be anything they want to be.

DEB HAALAND, ON HER ELECTION TO THE US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Growing up an “army brat” was not easy for Debra Ann (Deb) Haaland and her three siblings. A military family, the Haalands were often moving from one military base to another around the country. Deb attended thirteen schools before her family finally settled down in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she finished high school.

Deb’s parents, Major J. D. “Dutch” Haaland and Mary Toya, were both veterans of the United States military. Her father retired from the US Marine Corps after serving for thirty years and was a decorated officer. He was the recipient of fifteen medals during his career, including two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry for his actions in the Vietnam War. Haaland’s mother served in the US Navy when the couple was stationed in California.

Mary Toya is Laguna, and Deb’s father, who died in 2005, was Norwegian American. Deb was born December 2, 1960, in Winslow, Arizona. She is a thirty-fifth-generation New Mexican who is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna. She also has Jemez Pueblo heritage. Deb’s family was raised in a Pueblo household. She says, “In spite of the fact that we moved around a lot, we still kept those strong ties to my grandparents and our community of Laguna Pueblo. You can be Native wherever you are.”
